Well, on the advice of arkestra,
I tried Floatworks. Alas, no hallucinations,
no out of body experiences.

Just was able to relax my neck muscles
(not a small feat).

The problem is the following.
I was there twice, and both times I had
really strong heart palpitations.
So my question is:
What might be the negative effects from
floating (a part from drowning)?
Google doesn't think it's relevant.
So I ask you (especially arkestra).

Good for you! I used to go (not to floatworks but elsewhere in london) a few years ago. I initially went out of curiousity, and ended up going 2 or 3 times a months for around 6 months. I didn't experience either hallucinations nor heart palpitations and have no medical training so treat this opinion with that caveat.

I did find it more relaxing after a few sessions. Maybe I was nervous and not sure what to expect for the first few times. I remember that on a number of times (but not every time) I felt like I had been asleep for a while but didn't really feel like time had passed. Sounds weird I know. Also, I came out a few times (again not every time) feeling very invigorated and refreshed.

To address your question of negative effects: I wondered how clean the environment was. I don't think the liquid is changed between each float so it is basically having a bath in everyone else's water. Also, it's a warm, damp environment perfect for breeding nasty things (that illustrates the limit of my biological knowledge!).

Having said that, I didn't catch anything, only stopped because I started yoga and would do it again if I came across a centre in NY.
