Hey all,
I am about to start my first week in my computational finance degree and they are already beginning to press us to get our resumes in shape and start the internship hunt for next summer. My biggest problem is that I don't know what sort of internships to begin looking for!
Ideally, I would like to develop a career in researching quantitative investment models and dynamic portfolio management. However, my interests also lie in systematic trading (and I am especially intrigued by the high frequency space and stat arb).
I am currently looking into internships in trading or quantitative research in systematic trading. I am looking into firms like D.E. Shaw, Wolverine, and DRW Trading.
First, I am wondering if anyone who is more knowledgeable with career trajectories in finance could lay some knowledge on me as to what sorts of internships may be more beneficial to my long term career goals.
Secondly, I am looking to work either in the Chicago, NYC, or London areas for the summer. Can anybody recommend any firms that might fit with my interests? I am looking for smaller firms where I could make a bigger impact, but also firms that have a strong tradition of success in their area so I can learn from the best.
Any thoughts?
Thanks! |

I would suggest that you look at any of the firms that are known for their quantitative approach:
Banks -
Goldman Sachs Morgan Stanley (PDT or ETL are the primary groups that come to mind for you) Barclays Deutsche JP Morgan
Hedge Funds -
Two Sigma Millennium / World Quant Renaissance (tough to get into and I don't know that they offer internships) HBK Citadel IV Capital Tower Research Knight Blue Crest Winton Capital GSA Capital Etc.
Prop -
CTC (Chicago Trading Company) Fox River Partners Jump Trading Spot Trading GETCO Sun Trading Matlock Capital Ronin Capital Allston Trading Chopper Trading Tradelink Etc.
In regard to your future career trajectory: any quant job (other than perhaps quant risk or quant development) should be your aim. Experience is experience...
Ping me off-phorum for further details. Note - as a recruiter, I've never been paid to place an intern. Perhaps some of my brethren here have, but I have not. I'll point you in some directions, but you're going to need to do the leg work.
