I often find myself staring at these things wondering just how the minds that made them work...maybe the authors are just playing six dimensional chess and I am a 2 dimensional ant at the corner of the board...

I'm giving a talk a talk soon and wanted a slide that had a good example of an inspiring chart. Like art, one knows a good chart when one sees a good chart....

I remember a few good ones come from the desk's resident chartist in 2008, but didn't save any of them. If anyone can find a good one (preferably FX and attributable to someone with a bit of a name), please post.

I think HankScorpio gets the credit for pointing out the Black Swan Chart Pattern to me.  I keep the picture prominently displayed at my desk to remind me not to fall into the trap of believing too much in any forecast or pattern.

Just could not find my most preferred one. The guy had fitted an ellipse to the EURUSD demonstrating the rate was about to go back in time!

Not exactly what you are looking for, but the link to a recent Business Week page might be useful:  http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/correlation-or-causation-12012011-gfx.html?chan=magazine+channel_etc.

Emotions of a trader blindly following TA?

I shouldn't kid too much, my partner recently befriended a currency trader that uses some TA and would have given early 2000's P. Rotter a run for his money.

Ed Ponsi on CNBC - he's my favorite clown. Nothing like a 6 second TA "recommendation" in response to a tweet!

Perhaps asking a bunch of people sceptical about TA for a TA chart isn't a winning strategy.

I'm sure you can get what you want from a technical analysis book as those will include cherry-picked examples. Alternatively, just Google one of the people you consider "a bit of a name" and I'm sure you'll find their work has been posted on Scribd or Zerohedge or some other such site.

I'm not sure if you've understood the meaning of 'best' in this context....something to consider.

Maybe not. Care to define "best"?

EDIT: There is technical analysis on ZH from two well-known sellside technicians, both of whom work in FX and could be considered 'names'. If that is not what you're after, i.e. not sufficient for your talk, then provide more feedback so people can better assist you.

The advice so far has been more or less fine, I haven't stated it wasn't sufficient for my talk, I'm not sure why you have.

It's funny, but I do believe there is some truth to this chart...

well if you know the '~8% mean growth rate', '16-18 year consolidation cycle' and '16-18 year growth cycle' numbers ex-ante, I would tend to agree with you. Otherwise not really.

NeroTulip - that was my idea. There's nothing as good as inspiring a bit of cognitive dissonance in people..

These are not vampire-tooth-black-swan chart pattern formations, but they are worth a few giggles.
