the s'pore girl wasn't precisely to my current Nonian standards of beauty. but her daddy was very rich. I wasn't into that type of thing in the end.

don't they talk Hakkien down there or something like that?

Predominant dialect is Hokkien, correct. But the characters will be the same so if you became Chinese literate you could read whatever. As for the girl. Probably best that you took a miss. I'm sure the father is happy too. Rich Chinese Singaporeans seldom endorse their daughters ending up with Ang Mohs. It's pretty feudal in a lot of respects.

tell me about it. She invited me to S'pore once. She said no problem on meeting the family. Her dad wouldn't let me sleep in their house. Put me up in a hotel. A nice one though, and he let use one of their cars. they own a bunch of Palm Oil related industries.

If she had sisters living at home at the time it's pretty normal. You definitely got old school power-moved by him picking and paying for the hotel though it doesn't seem to have bothered you. Oil palm guys can be rough customers. Especially the ones operating in east Malaysia. Don't take the all expenses paid vacation to Sarawak in that case.

Malaysia is exactly where they were operating. Lam Soon. their fortunes/business/location may have changed since 1987.

she had no sisters. just one bro who studied at Oxford, had one of those faux british accents you find in S'pore and had all the right hobbies like wine, proper jazz etc.

anyway, she definitely wasn't a looker but she was fun to hang out with.

They're doing extremely well. They've further conquered Thailand since the 80's. Now I see the connection. Berkeley!

yep. Angry Didn't know they were doing well. anyway, I left her for a Japanese. This was back when I had the typical Berkeley geek tendencies to go for girls from a certain part of the world.
