In basic terms can someone can explain how in high frequency trading FPGA and colocation are related?

Well it's all about latency. There is no point in having an FPGA that can run your strategy really fast if you are sitting hundreds of milliseconds away from the exchange.

Goes the other way as well, no point in having really low network latency if your code takes too long to execute.

ok a bit clearer. Thanks

So FPGA sits on the server which is colocated at the exchanges data centre. When certain conditions are met as described on the program on teh fpga then it executes?
