For those unaware Micheal Atiyah presented his 'proof' of the Riemann Hypothesis today, and the general consensus is that it's the mad ravings of an old mind. Anyone more educated than I able to shed a bit more color on exactly where it went so wrong/just how off he is? From what I could gather in the proof he didn't even use a single property of the zeta function which seems like a pretty big smell to me.

Atiyah-Riemann Proof: banter summary

He does seem to have a bit of history for that sort of thing. Which is not a bad thing in itself - you miss 100% of shots you don't take. But it does appear he has been in need of a bit of QA somewhere since he retired.

I sort-of knew him back in the day. I was a PhD student at DAMTP in Cambridge in his time, but different part of the department and I had no overlaps with him.

Interesting, shame to see someone go out that way but with a fields medal and Abel prize I'm sure his legacy will remain mostly intact.

I don't think it hurts his legacy. This is a bit like 38 year old Muhammad Ali attempting a comeback and being knocked out by Larry Holmes.

Sure, he should have known better. So what.
