Anyone familiar with the Austin branch of DRW/have any general thoughts on DRW in general especially in comparison to other firms out there?

I can't comment on the Austin branch, but DRW has a good reputation.

It used to be RGM advisors. A pal of mine worked for them some years back when they were RGM; they have an interesting history -founders were a bunch of bicyclist dudes who worked in ... database marketing. Makes perfect sense if you stop to think about it; people who try to measure small, consistent effects caused by simple interventions.

Their software stack for research and deploy sounded kind of typical for a successful company which formed in 2001 in the salad days of HFT stuff; a bunch of C++ tied together with unix tooling. I have no idea what it's like now, but assume they, like every other pioneer in this field, don't the type of business they used to.

Here is a somewhat entertaining blog about what it is like to work at DRW. Supposedly about as truthful as the movie "the Social Network" was on the genesis of Facebook.
