I ve heard a lot that one should focus on the end game
rather than the openings (cfr., if you need some motivation,
the 3rd paragraph magnus carlsen.) Tongue out

I have never studied a book but when I was fifteen or so,
I enjoyed the game chess 10k, they offered lessons from
Waitzkin and an analysis of the games I played. Eventually,
I got bored because I couldn't find anyone to play with me irl.

This is extremely good. Anonymous or create an account. It gives you post-game analysis. Generally there's 10,000 players online at any one time so lots to chose from. I'd recommend creating an account. I've not played for 15 years and want to improve. Not quite up to the OP's 1600 yet!

Semi OT, but I was thinking about analyzing some proto-chess games at one point (many games haven't been analyzed by computer yet) and came across this neato website about programming your own chess engine:

I've started playing blindfold chess which is quite fun, especially as a party trick but it doesn't help me improve from 1500-1550 where I'm stuck!

At your level if you want easy rating points, just play a bunch of Side lines, Opening traps...and don't blunder 😆 I see people doing that all the way up to around 2200 level...
