Planning a family (wife and kid) trip down to Australia and New Zealand in March, any recommendations for places to stay and see?

Also, let me know if you guys are up for a microphest.

I'm always up for a microphest, it gets me out of the house.

What parts are you going to?  In NZ there are lots of things to do and see, I like the North Island better (Rotorua, Bay of Islands...)  There are lots of things to do and see in Oz too.  Kakadu National Park, Great Barrier Reef, Sydney is nice, catch a symphony or opera in the Opera House.  Wine regions (Barossa, Margaret River are good, the Hunter Valley is, well, closer to Sydney...).  Bring your surf board or rent one here.  I forget when the rugby is on, but I think you might be able to catch a game or two in either country.

Ladies and Gents,

I shall be in Sydney from Thursday the 14th of Feb until Monday the 18th of Feb (although leaving for home on Monday). If anyone is up for a few cheeky brewskies then please let me know.

I shall be there with my fiancée, so I guess that leaves Thursday the 14th out (Valentine's day)! Wink

Cheers.

I'll be around, as usual.  Why don't we pencil in Fri 15th?  In Oz, any points earned with the wife (including Valentine's day) usually have a high time decay rate so it's good to use them up quickly.

EDIT: and congratulations on your engagement!  Beer

"I like the North Island better "

WHAT?!? i think you are the only person who has ever said that. rotorua in particular is vile. a foul smelling, thug infested hole where you can't get a decent meal after 8. i wouldn't take a dump in rotorua.

If rotorua has a rival city (think Springfield and Shelbyville) then their chamber of commerce should hire you posthaste.

Tell me is there anything so sure? Rapacity, tenacity, capacity for more.

Yeah, ok, I've only visited but never lived there.  I've never been accused of having good taste and I didn't suggest actually staying in Rotorua.  Russell (sp?) is nice up at the Bay of Islands.  Or maybe just skip the whole thing, hop on a boat, and sail up to Fiji?  Better advice would come from some of the Kiwis among us, unless they are talking about rugby. Tongue out

The more the merrier.  Email me closer to the date and we can sort out the when, where, etc.

Edit: City of Sydney: What's On for our out of town visitors.  The open-air cinema is cool, depending on the movie, with all the fruit bats flying around and the Opera House in the background.

The Sydney Opera House is stunning.

Even more stunning is the local wildlife.  The Double-Breasted Mattress Thrasher is well known to frequent the Opera Bar, with great views of the Opera House and harbor, particularly on Friday evenings.

There's lots to recommend in NZ all depending on what you like.

I am partial to Wanaka/Queenstown, Fiordland, Waiheke Island, Marlborough Sounds, Nelson and Wellington.

If you are an active person there is too much to do.

If you are in Auckland there is a service that will helicopter you to dinner and back.

I expect to be around then.  There is also a conference on 17-20 December in case anyone is coming through for that one.

Nonius, are you still coming through on the 3rd and/or 4th?  Anyone else interested in starting a little holiday cheer if that is possible in these times?

We saw him last night for drinks in Singapore.  He said he was on a flight your way today.

Where are you going to take him?

Yadunno, most mathematicians I know don't even drink.  I'm open to suggestions.  I also believe I owe you a beer when you are able to collect.

EDIT: I'm having flashbacks to "Weekend at Bernie's" here.

Dudenator, 1000 apologies.....it was pretty hectic down in Oz, with one day in Melbourne and 2 days in Sydney and a number of managers to visit.  had to do a sort of company/client thing in the evenings so didn't get a chance to contact you.  I did manage to almost get kicked out of the bar at a hotel called something like "CDB".  Angry

No problem, these things happen.  Maybe next time.  Hotel CBD is nothing special to get booted from, there is one around the corner just like it that would take you in immediately.

You picked an interesting week - Macquarie, Deutsche and Citi all firing people.  Tis the season.

you guys have a good thing going on down there.
