how do you find cutting edge areas of computer science research that have the potential to be made into new products/companies?
any ideas how to best approach this? sorry if this is a kinda vague question |

Shouldn't you maybe reverse this? First think of a new problem which needs to be solved and that should then lead you to the product/company.
You'll discover the required tools (cutting edge CS areas) if and when you need them. Otherwise, with your shiny new CS thingies you'll end up with the proverbial hammer. And it will be all nails around you..
