Not sure if I would ever want this, but very likely it will find its own funs.

I remember after 9/11 there was a store that popped up tucked away on Ann Street. They mainly sold parachute rigs. They may have sold other things, like gas masks and iodine tablets. Of course, if you really wanted a parachute, you'd want to learn from the BASE crowd - smaller and less cells in canopy, shorter steering and guy lines, etc. - and build one yourself. |

Somehow, in my head, aurora7 links to "Kalashnikov", although AK-47 is a very elegant and concise design from inside/out, not like this. |

@chiral3 back then, yes, you'd have to mod your own rig. These days, you can get BASE canopies form APEX and couple other shops - I don't know much about it since I've done exactly one BASE jump and was terrified enough to not thinking about it again.
In any case, I'd imagine IRL for a 9/11 situation you'd probably rather have a static rope, a harness and a descender. People have rapped the whole length of El Cap so rapping from BoA building should be very doable :) again, I don't know much about since I've been mostly sniffing pads for the last 5 years or so. |

Well, assuming you don't walk off you can rap el cap in about 15 pitches with two 70m ropes. Not going to help you in manhattan if you're rigging anchors in a bad situation.
Anyway, my parallel with that computer is it seems a bit opportunistic. Seems they just developed a big bespoke DC PSU to have a self contained post apocalyptic machine with a bunch of monitors. |

Manhattan is full of great anchors! Source: rapped off the radiator under window in midtown apartment.
In all seriousness even with a giant static line I'm not sure it's the best in a fire situation, nylon melts easily. Didn't realize there were climbers on this site :) |
