They have one not fun looking job posted, but they are trying to make it look like it isn't them. The location + hardware gives it away.
"We are a private investment management company looking for a Senior Solaris/Linux SA who has degree in Math or Science. We are currently running Solaris 2.8 and RedHat Linux.
The environment consists of 200+ servers (50% Solaris 50%Linux). The servers are running all proprietary programs and are using Legato for backup.
We are growing rapidly and need someone who is growth oriented and is willing to learn.
Position is located in Long Island." |

A few years back when I was still in school, I went UCLA attending a math finance conference, RenTech has a job post there, but after I applied, I did not even receive a notice. |

But my friends, we must ask ourselves, is Jim Simons REALLy happy with all those billions of dollars and all of that mathematical research he is famous for? |

Nonius, he should give you wood. Why? Because he has achieved, on many levels, what you would like to achieve: the direct transformation of intellect into monetary benefit. |

It is hard to say if he is happy or not, but I think it is safe to say he is less unhappier |

Of course I did. I wonder how much humble pie he had to eat. I just hope that if I get to his point, and it takes that long, that my manhood still works so I can be like Hef. It would be like Disneyland - I'd sample a country every night. |

it does all sort of remind me of when I was a kid. there was this dude, Joey Kalina. I surfed, and then he took up surfing and was better. Then, I took up tennis, and of course, he got really good a tennis and was liked better by the coach. Then, he got the chick I wanted....then, zoom about 1000 years later, I meet him on the street in SF, and he tells me he's running an arbitrage desk. |

That is annoying when you are first looking for a job. You don't know if they are saying fuck-off, or if they are taking time and you should be patient. That is a hold over from big companies that could't call everyone back, but it became canonical. Ergo little companies do it too. |

Unless you compare yourself to a total loser....then you feel great!
anyway, I think I mentioned this before...my evil advisor was in fact one of Simon's "business associates"...he often asked me if I wanted him to set me up with a conversation with Simons. I passed on it at the time, because I wasn't interested in Finance, nor in math. |

set your course by the stars, not by the light of every passing ship.
if you can't do that, you have to have him disposed of. |

I think that when you compare yourself to another man, you must compare your whole self to the other man's whole self.
I think one cannot say "I want his money, but not his --------" (fill in the gaps). You must take the man as a whole, as a package. All included. His wife, his kids, his personal quirks, the pimples on his nose, ----- you name it.
This is the only honest, meaningful wish that one can make. |

If you google for RenTech you find an interview with Simons. At the time of the interview Simons was 62 and said that he intended to retire at 65. That and the fact that he's got more money than he could possibly know what to do with. Hence the question.
