new to the industry of hedge fund/FoF, I have to invest in a "software" that is a kind of database provider about hedge funds.
I'd like to now if some people here had advices about such tools.
I'm in contact with Pertrac right now which seems to be quite good, but having "customer" feelings is always a good thing before buying such an expensive software.
thanks in advance |

I'm looking for a hedge fund database, searching old threads I see this discussion but nothing more recent.
At the time people seemed unhappy with PerTrac, are there others that people have experience with?
I'm really just looking for the raw data and classification of the funds, not interested in the software or analytical tools. |

kubrick,
If you just want data go to:
www.hedgefund.net Eurekahedge HFR (hedge fund research)
There are a few others but thats a good cross section. Be careful, though, as the databases dont categorize with the same semantics, so it's hard to keep everything nice and tidy. In house, we had to design our own data aggregator to take funds that appear in different databases and classify then in a uniform way. It was not pretty.
Hope that helps

What RQ said.
You have one of 4 options for a HF database: HFR, TASS, CISDM and MAR. There is no standard structure to each of the databases and each is riddled with biases. |
I don't think, therefore I ham. |

TASS is a lot more expensive than Hedgefund.net for example... what do you gain by the increased cost?
Let's say I wanted a database that information on how specific funds are performing (thse would be well established quant funds). Do any of these sources tend to have good info along those lines? |

Each is available to accredited investors only I assume? |

Sorry for replying to an old thread. As an exercise in data scraping, I've built a hedge fund database, which is currently freely available, at NilssonHedge
This database contains returns/aum and has a focus on CTAs and Other liquid strategies. 99% of the data is sourced from public sources, which you could probably do yourself, but here there is a uniform format of the data, updated frequently and subject to multiple quality checks. |

it's not actually freely available, I had a look around the site, and you have to spend $5 to get an account. And even then, there's no guarantee there is any data available, after all if you can't be honest over whether it is freely accessible or not, then how can I believe you're honest about whether I have access after having departed $5.
edit: apologies, it does seem you can download without spending. The way to do it is to add to the cart, and fill in address details, it then leads you to download. |

I haven't tried registering lately, but it does say that the database is free and that donations are appreciated (seems to be based on the name your own price-principle). If that isn't the case for you, you might want to contact the maintainer directly about that, there is also a mail address on the page.
I can confirm that there is a downloadable database, which I've found to be a useful resource (thank you, Glavkon!).
And no, I have no connection to the maintainer.

OK, it seems you can download things by adding to the cart.
You have to enter "billing address" though, although it doesn't check accuracy. |

Yeah, sorry, it costs a bit to run the website hence asking for a small voluntary donation, but the data is freely available (at least for now). There is plenty of free data on the site, but the whole database requires giving up an email. |
