I smoke at least a pack a day. I absofuckingloutley love cigs and I love the nicotine but I'm starting to feel sick in the morning and I started to cough late in the evening. I'm also terrified of tumors.
Anyone else successfully managed to kick the habit? I gotta stop. |

2.5? Not bad... not bad at all. I smoked that much last year (it was closer to 3 actually). I gradually cut it down to 2 and then to 1.5. Now I average 1. I can't go less than that.... i'd go insane. |

And that would change what exactly? |

Hey hey hey... what makes you think I'm less sane than yourself? And to answer your inquiry, I'd probably kill or maim somebody around me. |

I'm not saying that you are less sane than myself. If you were... that would really worry me.
Bah killing and maiming has nothing to do with insanity. I used to do it for a living, so I should know. |

I'd have a really tough time in a slammer. I was incarcerated a few times for starting fights in clubs and shit like that and I didn't particularly like the furnishings and amenities of a cell. I think a part of the blame for that shit can be attributed to steroids I used to take at the time.
As for sanity.... hmmm... I'm not sure if you're as fucked up as me. I'm pretty messed up so I guess that's why I work in finance. |

I smoked two-packs a day of Camel navy cuts in college (when I quit rowing).
I quit by going cold turkey (because I knew I could not afford cigs in Seminary, where I was heading next).
It was the absolute worst experience of my life. Getting off heroin cannot be so bad (this was pre-'the patch' days). It sucked for two solid weeks. headaches, nausea, no sex drive, morning vomiting, shakes. you name it, i had it.
This was 21 years ago now.
Not a day, nay, not even an hour goes by that I don't still want a cigarette.
Good luck quiting. But I don't believe you ever 'quit.' You really just stop, and still want. |

LOL!
But maybe not so good if it's your last two weeks before going to the Seminary. |

Good point James. This is especially true when drinking. It's fucking hard to go a whole night of drinking without at least one cig. |

"surely lack of sex drive is a good thing in a Seminary?"
Now I will tell you a secret:
When you go to seminary, nearly your first act, upon arriving, is to go to confession.
Naturally, having a <slight> clue about what you are in for for the rest of your life, let's say the 'rational' participant tries to 'make up' for it before that *known*event*.
In this *heterosexual's* case, it was,......uhhhhh-hem.....'cleaning up my breath'.....by quiting smoking. Getting a nice haircut, putting on my best manners, and heading out for the evening.
Next secret: the strategy of trying to pick up girls by saying 'I'm going to seminary in a few months' is sub-optimal. <as if I needed to tell you that>. |

Wayyy off topic, but does seminary imply Catholocism? Does it imply Christianity? Or is it a relatively generic word for "religious leader training"? |

I quit smoking two or three years ago. It was terrible. It took me about six months before the effects went away: shaking, palpitations, running hot-and-cold, weird jet lag spinning feeling in my head, the whole works.
But once I got through that, I never wanted to smoke a cigarette. Not once. And now I feel healthy and energetic again.
Mostly.

I used to smoke a pack a day. I quit for health reasons (mine and that of my passive smoking spouse). I quit gradually, firstly to cigars and pipes, then altogether because there were almost no public places where they were tolerated, and I hate sitting in confined places designated for smokers because they stink, and sitting there gave me headaches.
I didn't suffer any palpitations or side effects, but during my transitional year of quitting, I gained about 25 lbs that I never lost again. It also takes me a long, long time to get into full concentration mode. I now think I was not a nicotine addict, but that smoking was an aid to concentration. |
Time is on my side. |

Yes. I thought everybody knew. I was a 'High-Church' Anglo-Catholic (read: Episcopalina who wants corporate reunion with Rome), but converted to Catholicism, and quit Seminary. I could not get a job *anywhere* until finally REFCO, to their everlasting credit, said they didn't care what I'd done before and gave me a job as a runner. In six months I was promoted to Research, and the rest is history. |

I stopped smoking two years ago. First two weeks were living hell. I still have to fight against the urge to smoke. But a good cigar three times a year is fine, especially if it's a cuban one. |

I was never good at smoking cigars. It's quite a different thing than smoking a cigarette.
Cigarette smoking is deep-inhaling-drug-addiction-get-that-nicotine-in-me-now-baby! Try doing that with your Lanceros and it's not gonna be pretty. |
